The biggest misconception in wrestling history is that the New World Order was cool.
There was nothing cool about WWE rejects Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Virgil and the 1-2-3 Kid strutting to the ring with fake swag. If anything, they looked out of place, the only redeeming factor their black and white nWo tees.
No, the coolest element of the nWo was Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, known collectively as The Outsiders. It was those two former WWE stars that recognized the change in culture, knew what was cool and what was not, and worked it into the act. They were cocky, sarcastic and had two of the best wrestling minds in the business, when they wanted to use them.
Without Hall and Nash's presence, the success enjoyed by the other members of the New World Order, and WCW, would not have existed. They fueled the gimmick, something they do not get nearly enough credit for.
Yes, Hogan put the group over the top, providing that shocking betrayal that made the industry sit up and take notice. But Nash and Hall appealed to the 18-35 demographic that Eric Bischoff and upper management chased. It worked because of them and their contributions, further adding to their Hall of Fame credentials.
