Antoine Griezmann, France forward and Golden Boot winner: "It’s cruel and magnificent at the same time. We’ve lived through some extraordinary moments, and the saddest moments as well. We have to learn. But tonight we gave it our all and we have no regrets. I'm proud of the squad, proud of everybody. Now we have to come back stronger. This time we didn’t manage it, unlike against Germany. It's a pity. We hit the post, I had chances as well and I almost scored. The goalkeeper played well, too. It's frustrating, but we must come back stronger."

Antoine Griezmann, France forward and Golden Boot winner: "[As top scorer] Maybe later I can feel proud, but for now, it’s about the group. I’m very disappointed for my team-mates. I really wanted to offer them this trophy, but I couldn’t score and I’m disappointed."

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal captain: "I'm so happy – very happy. This was something I've wanted for a long time now, ever since [EURO] 2004. I asked God to give me another chance. The Portuguese people deserve this; our players deserved this. Unfortunately, things didn’t go well for me. I injured myself in the first few minutes. But I’ve always believed in these players. They have quality and ability, along with our coach’s strategy to win."

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal captain: "I’d like to thank my team-mates, our coach, our wider team in this EURO, the Portuguese people and all the ex-pats who were always with us, cheering for us from the beginning. This is a unique moment for me, for all the Portuguese people and it’s unforgettable."

Fernando Santos, Portugal coach: "I've always said we’re a team. I never hide my thoughts – I always tell my players what’s on my mind. I've always told them we've got great talent but we need to fight more than our opponents, run more than them and be more focused than them. We have an amazing group. They’ve always believed what I told them: that we could win this."

Éder, Portugal goalscorer: "It was a very special goal, the winning goal. A turn and strike that ended up being unstoppable for [Hugo] Lloris. But it's a goal that was very well created by the team, and by all the effort the team put in both in this match and since the beginning of EURO."
Éder, Portugal goalscorer: "We went through a difficult spell after [Cristiano] Ronaldo's injury, because he's the best player in the world and an important player for us. But after that he still gave us all his strength and bravery, and we got this important victory, both for him and all of Portugal."

Pepe: We won it for Ronaldo

Portugal's Pepe said that his side were "warriors" and admited that Cristiano Ronaldo's injury helped spur them on to victory.

Portugal are the tenth different nation to win the UEFA European Championship, joining six other countries in having lifted the Henri Delaunay Cup once.

New European champion Renato Sanches has been chosen above Kingsley Coman and Portugal team-mate Raphael Guerreiro for the SOCAR Young Player of the Tournament award.

Fernando Santos, Portugal coach: "We were as simple as doves and as wise as serpents."
